Robin, Maurice and Barry formed a band with two local friends and called themselves “The Rattlesnakes”. Their first public performance was on December 28, 1957 at the Gaumont Theatre in Manchester. With a broken record, the boys decided to go on stage and sing themselves. They were given a shilling each by the manager and asked to come back the next week. In May 1958 the family moved again to Northen Grove in the West Didsbury district of Manchester. Their friends left the band and they renamed themselves “Wee Johnny Hayes and the Blue Cats”. They performed at The Palatine Cinema and become well known to the local children for harmonizing to “Lollipop”.
